Welcome to my corner of the crochet world. I’m Linda Skuja, a textile and crochet designer from Riga, Latvia. Texture has always been at the centre of my work. I’m especially interested in what crochet can do when we move beyond the obvious - playing with short rows, three-dimensional stitches, unusual constructions and techniques that give crochet its own distinct character. I’ve been designing professionally since 2010. Over the years, my work has appeared in magazines and books around the world, and I’ve had the chance to work with fashion designers on pieces for New York Fashion Week. I’ve also written two books of my own, both exploring crochet garments through texture and thoughtful construction. For me, designing is a little like solving a puzzle. I usually start with a very clear image in my head, and the best moment comes when I finally figure out how to make it work - when the stitches, construction and maths fall into place and the idea becomes an actual garment. Teaching has become another important part of what I do. Through my Domestika course, online classes and masterclasses at yarn festivals around Europe, I share the techniques and ideas I’ve developed through years of experimenting with crochet. I’m not particularly interested in telling you exactly what crochet should be. I’d much rather show you what it could be. There is still so much to discover.
